CHS Engineers Ltd. was formed in 2016 by Mike Horsley, Graham Cox and Nathan Shand. Mike and Graham have since retired their directorship, and in April 2022 James King joined Nathan as co-director. Together they bring over 20 years of experience in the field, and are passionate about delivering excellent design with the best quality service.

Nathan graduated with an honours degree in civil engineering from the University of Auckland in 2007. He has since worked for small consultancies in both Auckland and London, working as a structural engineer.
In 2014 Nathan moved to Tauranga and joined Mike, Graham and Ian at MCH. Then in 2016, Nathan joined Mike and Graham as directors of CHS Engineers Ltd.
Nathan is passionate about structural engineering and enjoys the problem-solving aspects of the job as well as interacting with clients and seeing projects through from concept to construction.

James graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in 2008 with a Bachelor in Science majoring in Physics, before attending the University of Auckland to undertake his studies in engineering. He graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours.
James started his engineering career in Auckland before moving home to Tauranga in 2015, joining Fairclough and King Consultants Ltd. In 2021 he moved to CHS Engineers Ltd, becoming a director in April 2022.
James has experience in structural, geotechnical and civil aspects of engineering, and has worked on a wide variety of residential, commercial and industrial projects. He is passionate about providing practical, cost-effective design solutions to his clients, and building strong enduring relationships with those he works with.

Wilson graduated from South China University of Technology (China) and got his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering in 2010.
Wilson worked as a Structural Engineer for more than 10 years in China, especially experienced in the design of concrete and steel structures. In 2018, he and his family started their new journey in New Zealand and settled in Tauranga in 2019. Since then, Wilson has continued to grow his engineering knowledge through local projects, working on a variety of commercial and residential designs and assessments.

Laichen Angel
Structural Design Engineer
Laichen graduated from Mountain Province State Polytechnic College (College of Engineering and Technology in the Philippines ) in 2007 with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
He started his career in civil engineering in the Philippines and upon moving to New Zealand in 2012, was elected as a member by Engineering New Zealand.
Once elected, Laichen then went on to work with various structural engineering consultancies, beginning as a structural engineering technician, then progressing to structural engineer. Laichen has experience across a wide variety of residential, light commercial and industrial projects.

Andy graduated from Aalen University of Applied Science (Germany) in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree of engineering in Mechatronics. He and his wife moved to NZ in 2017, starting their NZ experience first in New Plymouth, later in Auckland and have recently moved to Tauranga. Andy has gained his experience working in engineering companies in Salach Goeppingen (Germany) and Auckland. In Germany he mainly focused on mechanical drafting but after moving to New Zealand he switched to Structural drafting and modelling.
Andy has 6 years work experience using various drafting platforms, such as Creo, ProSteel 3D, Vektorworks and Autodesk Revit.
Andy joined the CHS team in 2022 and is excited to provide his drafting skills to the client and is very happy to be a part of the CHS Engineers team.

Graham returned to Tauranga in 1992, joining the Tauranga City Council’s business unit design office before acquiring the business in 1994 and establishing CSE Engineers.
In 1999 Graham joined Mike Horsley and established MCH Ltd, which operated until 2016 when Nathan joined the company and CHS Engineers was formed. In 2022, Graham stepped down as a director but continues to work as a consultant to CHS Engineers.
Graham’s career has covered a broad spectrum of structural and civil engineering and he has been involved with the Tauranga City Council’s building consent process since 1992, providing reviews and structural advice.

Mike Horsley
Senior Consulting Engineer
Mike graduated from Canterbury University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering, majoring in structures. After graduating, Mike worked for Tauranga City Council in the design office carrying out design work, infrastructure and building consent processing.
Leaving TCC as senior staff engineer in 1985, Mike joined Fairclough and Bedford where he worked for 2 years as a design engineer before becoming self-employed. In 1999, Mike was joined by Graham Cox where they formed MCH.
Since then, Mike has been involved in contract management, subdivision management and structural engineering. Mike has a particular interest in project management, contract administration and structural design. In 2021 Mike stepped down as a director of CHS, however continues to offer his professional services as a Senior Consultant to the company.
